| Split is the largest city, as well as the most important cultural and economic center of Dalmatia. The old city core is found under the hill Marjan. The islands in the area of Split are Brac, Hvar, Solta, and Ciovo. Some of the most famous cultural and historical monuments are Diocletian's Palace built by the roman emperor Diocletian in the 3rd century. Palace of Diocletian is also an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other interesting sites include the cathedral of Split, the bell tower of St. Duje, the city's square, Prokurative, Mestrovic gallery, the museum of Croatian archaeological monuments and monument to Grgur Of Nin. In the center of Split there is the famous sandy beach Bačvice, where people often play the local sport called “Picigin”. Another sandy beach near the center of Split is Firula, great for families and small children. There are numerous events and manifestations in Split, especially during the summer. Some of the most important are Split Summer Festival, St Duje festival and Marulić days – the festival of Croatian drama and theater. |
