Zadar, a city of rich cultural history, is over 3000 years old. Located in north Dalmatia at almost the center of Croatian Adriatic coast it is surrounded by five Croatian national parks: Paklenica, Plitvice Lakes, Krka, Kornati and North Velebit. The city protected by the archipelago of islands, the biggest being Pasman, Ugljan, Molat, Iz, and Dugi otok. Zadar has a rich cultural and historical heritage, best known building in Zadar is church of St. Donat, built in the 9th century. Other interesting sites include the street Kalelarga, cathedral St. Stošije and Church St. Krševana which are prime examples of Romanic architecture in Croatia, the archaeological museum, the unique sea organs and The Great Arsenal. The first university in Zadar is mentioned in 1396., and the first newspaper in Croatian language were published in Zadar, as well as the first novel in 1536.
